Curriculum

At Village Prep, our focus is on preparing scholars to be strong readers and disciplined students. There are three hours of reading instruction each day, and 1.5 hours of math. This nearly doubles what is seen in most elementary classrooms. Students also receive writing and penmanship, science, and social studies instruction. Additionally, Village Prep begins exposing children to computers in the first year, with Waterford Software, a program that builds literacy skills.
Art, physical education, and character education are incorporated into the schedule. These enrichment courses will be held four times a week.
All curriculum used at Village Prep is research-based and aligned to Ohio’s academic content standards.
Specifically, the school uses Reading Mastery, which stresses decoding skills, and Text Talk for the morning read aloud sessions, stressing comprehension. Scholastic Books are used for guided reading, and Everyday Math and Saxon Math are used as guides for teaching mathematical concepts. Our social studies curriculum uses the Houghton Mifflin textbooks, writing uses the Lucy Calkins Writers Workshop series, and penmanship uses the Zaner-Bloser materials. It is important to note that all of the texts listed above only serve as foundations for the lessons, which are customized and designed by teachers to meet the individual needs of our scholars. All lessons and curriculum are based on the Ohio common core standards.
Teachers also use the following techniques:
Word Building
Glass Analysis
Syllasearch
Repeated Reading
Text Talk
Questioning the Author
Robust Vocabulary
Additionally, students and their families are asked to do at least 20 minutes of reading each night, and Village Prep teachers provide books for each student to use through the Village Prep Reading Backpack Program.
